Bands of green, black, bordered by white stripes, and yellow form a horizontal tri-colour, with a red isosceles triangle at the hoist which is inset with a yellow star, that itself is partially overlaid with symbols of a bayoneted rifle, a book and a hoe, all in black. The colours are those of Frelimo, the ruling political party. Red is for blood shed in the fight for independence, green for the fertile land, black for Africa, yellow for mineral wealth and white for peace and justice. The yellow star is for Marxism, which was later abandoned. The rifle is for vigilance, the hoe for agriculture and the book for education.
